Dr. Maria Montessori
Montessori education is based on the theories and practices
of a talented physician and educator, Maria Montessori, (1870-1952),
who revolutionized European educational philosophy. She encouraged
giving children the freedom to explore a variety of challenging
materials and concepts as soon as they were capable of understanding.
Dr. Montessori recognized that children are born with absorbent
minds and the spontaneous ability to absorb knowledge from
their environment. Montessori believed that the first six years
of life were the most important for the development of the
human potential. We feel that these philosophies still hold
true today.
The Montessori Classroom
Our Montessori environment encourages the children to explore.
In their classrooms, they discover a world of peace, beauty,
consistency, and learning. Montessori Island School works
with parents in partnership to insure that all the children
blossom developmentally. The essential cornerstones of
our program include:
- Daily sharing of events
- Smooth and happy
transition times
- Challenging and rewarding learning materials and practices
- Respect for each individual
child and family
